The World Poker Tour

Among the many poker events that have begun to proliferate these days, the World Poker Tour is one of the largest and most widely televised.

The World Poker Tour features some of the world's most skilled professional poker players, and it is a series of international poker tournaments held mainly in the United States. The poker game variant being played in the World Poker Tour is Texas Hold'em, which is the most popular and widely played poker game today.

The World Poker Tour was founded in 2002 by Steven Lipscomb, and American attorney and television producer. He is currently the CEO of a company that now controls the World Poker Tour, WPT Enterprises. The events featured in the World Poker Tour are all televised and internationally syndicated as a single television show. This show has contributed substantially to the rise in poker's popularity as a recreational game.

The key sponsors for this particular poker event are casinos, poker rooms, and poker websites. Its first season began in the later half of 2002, and ended early 2003. The season's climax was the World Poker Tour Championship, held in the Bellagio Casino in Las Vegas, in April of 2003. This first season was aired on the Travel Channel, and made its network debut on NBC on February 1, 2004.

For its first five seasons, the World Poker Tour was aired on the Travel Channel, but in April of 2007, World Poker Tour Enterprises declared that the television series would air its sixth season on GSN, debuting on March 24, 2008. For its seventh season, World Poker Tour Enterprises has announced that it would move to Fox Sports Net. Most of the commentary given by main hosts Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten are recorded post-production, but the hosts also interact with players during the game. Most of the audio broadcast during the show is a mix of post-game commentary and live recording.

Vince Van Patten co-hosted the World Poker Tour, along with the winner of a World Series of Poker bracelet, Mike Sexton, as well as Shana Hiatt. After its third season, Shana Hiatt was replaced as sideline reporter and co-host by Courtney Friel. In the fifth season, Friel's role was turned over to Sabina Gadecki, and in the sixth season, she was replaced by Layla Kayleigh and Kimberly Lansing. Currently, Amanda Leatherman serves as the online host for the "live updates" on the World Poker Tour website. More things are in store for the future.
